  • Two Balloons premiers at 30th Foyle Film Festival on 25 Nov.

    Two Balloons

Premier’s at the 30th Anniversary of Foyle Film Festival

    On Saturday 25th November

On Saturday 25th November the magical stop-motion animated short film Two Balloons will premiere at the Foyle Film Festival. Two Balloons was four years in the making and it tells the story of two adventurous lemurs travelling the skies in their wondrous airships. One night they meet by chance and forge a bond which sees them through a calamity and cements their friendship.

Two Balloons was inspired by the music of Peter Broderick, a celebrated American composer who has collaborated with Philip Glass, Efterklang, Yann Tiersen, M. Ward and Dustin O’ Halloran amongst many others, as well as composing his own music and film scores. When director Mark Smith heard Broderick’s ‘More of a Composition’ he knew instantly that he wanted to work with him.

Originally the film was envisaged as a live action short and the plan was to build two real airships, but the production ran into problems when they couldn’t secure an aircraft hangar for the required length of time. So instead Mark decided to create the film as a stop-motion animated film despite the fact that he had no prior experience of stop-motion animation. As he says: ‘When I took the decision to pursue stop-motion as a medium to tell a story, I didn’t know what I didn’t know.’

One of the first questions asked when they made this decision was, ‘what form will the characters take?’ Mark took inspiration from Cyril Connolly’s The Unquiet Grave in which Connolly admires ring-tailed lemurs: ‘they held the secret of life to me; they were clues to an existence without thought, guilt or ugliness wherein all was grace, appetite and immediate sensation.’ And so the two curious adventurers in Two Balloons were born.

Mark and his crew spent sixteen months storyboarding and building a stage to encompass the sets of the half-scale lemur world. Only then did they begin to shoot which was a time-consuming process: shots which were only ten seconds long took two months to shoot. The result is the nine-minute long Two Balloons, an exceptional and heart-warming film which was a labour of love for all involved.

The Foyle Film Festival celebrates its 30th anniversary this year and will mark this with more screenings than ever before. The crew from Two Balloons are thrilled that the film will receive its world premiere at such an important milestone event.

Adopted and not knowing his history or connection to his Welsh roots, many of these songs are influenced by the complex feelings that come from unknown lineage.

It’s been a whirlwind 12 months for Fennell. He saw the release of his debut EP Hurt For Me, which features a song (“Leave Like That”) with Jenn  Champion (formerly of slowcore heroes Carissa’s Wierd), and signed to Nettwerk Music Group at the end of 2016. One of the standout tracks from the EP is “Where’s My Love,” an expertly crafted song featuring sparse production and intimate songwriting, all underpinned by Fennell’s powerful, yet delicate vocals.

  • River Matthews, releases ‘Sunshine’ and announces Cork, Galway & Dublin dates in November.

Releases Sunshine and announces Irish tour dates

“Our New Favourite Thing..” – Jo Whiley, BBC Radio 2

    Uniquely Theraputic” – Clashmusic

“This lads vocal performance is on another level altogether” Headliner Magazine

“One of those moments.. When you hear and artist and immediately know that something special is going on.” – Billboard Magazine

River Matthews, is an artist for whom the stars seem to have aligned since the days of playing cover songs in local pubs. A career as a musical therapy teacher, and no small amount of heartbreak.. Has led to working with world renowned songwriter Jamie Scott and more recently, supporting Rag ‘N’ Bone Man on his sold-out ‘Human’ tour. Now, the Surrey-born songwriter is stepping out on his own with his new EP “Sunshine”. Already receiving critical appreciation from plaudits and a notable feature on Spotify’s New Music Friday, it’s a release set to cement River Matthews in the nation’s hearts this summer.

River’s first forays into music came at the age of 7 learning classical guitar. Then, as with most young lads, he lost interest in his teenage years as he embarked on an informal education of The Beach Boys, Cat Stevens, the Beatles and The Rolling Stones, from the school of Mum and Dad. After fanning the musical flames, River soon found himself performing 60’s & 70’s hits at local pubs & venues, alongside some more crowd-friendly tracks from Oasis & Radiohead. Still, it was a long time before he ever put pen to paper.

River’s next step was to put his musical ability to altruistic use, spending years working with special needs children, using music to help build confidence and self-esteem in the students. “The energy and care all the staff put into the lives of the students is quite incredible. I can honestly say I owe a huge amount to that place, for so many different reasons”.

It was this path that eventually led River to songwriter, Jamie Scott, and since then the pieces have all fallen into place. After breaking into the public consciousness with the tantalizingly brilliant ‘Stars’, River soon followed that up with the one of the years most feel-good releases.. The Sunshine EP was supported by Spotify on their New Music Friday playlist on the day of release as well as breaking their UK Viral top 50. This amongst critical acclaim, led to a sold-out first London headline show at St Pancras Old Church.

The new single ‘Sunshine’ is an unapologetically feel-good slice of summer, singer-songwriter pop. Hook-driven, high quality production provides the backdrop for River’s distinctive vocal, which oozes soul and charm in equal measure. Perfect for the festival season, it’s a track that has the same energy performed with a full band as with just River and his guitar on stage. It’s ice-creams, cider, pub gardens and suntans in three minutes of British summer bliss.

  • Rosborough releases debut single ‘Burn Blue’ and announces show in Nerve Center, Derry

DEBUT SINGLE ’BURN BLUE’ Releasing on Fri 13 October

Listen to and Download from here:

Announcing The Nerve Centre, Derry on Saturday 18th November

“Morphing a thick Derry accent into powerful, spine-tingling vocals that rival Caleb Followill” – Hotpress

Glenn Rosborough is a singer songwriter from Derry, Northern Ireland. In a city steeped in music and performance he grew up in a household full of records that became his influences.

“I started my musical life from a very early age, teaching myself guitar at the age of ten and writing songs from the year after. Growing up in a musical household, with childhood heroes such as Tom Waits, Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel, becoming a musician was not a destined path but as realistic a career as becoming a lawyer, plumber or doctor. My parents made sure of that.”  Glenn Rosborough.

Rosborough cut his teeth in the vibrant music scene in Derry, playing regular shows at Bennigan’s and the Warehouse which allowed him to try new songs on an audience full of writers and performers.

This cultural hub served him well, allowing him to cultivate and refine an album’s worth of songs that attracted the attention of Ignition Records to whom he signed in 2017.

This year Glenn has been on tour both as a headline artist and supporting some great acts including The DMAs, Mew and Seafret throughout the UK and Europe.  He has also appeared at festivals such as the Great Escape and Community Festival, showcasing new songs whilst building a great live reputation and loyal following.

Rosborough is currently recording his debut album.

  • Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds announce new album & World Tour

Instrumentals, imagined soundtracks and cut and paste experimentation sets a bracing, perception-shattering course for WHO BUILT THE MOON? the keenly anticipated, WORLD TOUR-triggering third album from:

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds: Who Built The Moon?

Formats: CD, CD Deluxe Package, LP and Digital

Release Date: Fri 24 November 2017

    Label: Sour Mash Records

    Pre-Order Link: https://NGHFB.lnk.to/WBTM

While flowing from the same, molten core of melody, songwriting craft and towering self-belief, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds’ new album, Who Built The Moon? alters the legendary singer-songwriter’s course following a bracing, two-year creative collaboration with renowned producer, DJ and composer, David Holmes. Released on Fri 24 November 2017 on Sour Mash, the keenly anticipated follow-up to the platinum-selling, Chasing Yesterday (2015) is set for prompt live treatment as Gallagher and band announce a 2018 World Tour.

Live arena shows start in April 2018 across the UK & Ireland and go on general sale at 9am, this Friday 29 September 2017 with details, links to purchase tickets and tour updates available at www.noelgallagher.com

Bursting bubbles of perception, drilling dynamite into cracks between past and present and painting a daring portrait of the artist as a free man, Who Built The Moon? gathers vocalists and guest musicians from around the world to breathe life into 11-tracks finely poised between experimental and a jukebox of ageless influence. Meeting to work in Belfast and London, Gallagher and Holmes tuned into French psychedelic pop as much as classic electro, soul, rock, disco and dance on a cultured adventure into recorded sound.

If tracks blipping with ethereal, electronic experimentation and French spoken word start rumours of Gallagher’s restlessness, then instrumentals drifting with a latent, melancholic energy, inspired by European television soundtracks confirm them. Setting fire to familiarity, Gallagher wrote entirely in the studio for the first time, leaping into laboratory conditions and a cut and paste adventure with Holmes, turning his back, at least temporarily, on studied solitude and six strings. The studio door was left open for Paul Weller (organ on Holy Mountain) and Johnny Marr (guitar and harmonica on If Love Is The Law) to not only bear witness to, but make a mark on a pivotal moment in Gallagher’s ten studio album career.

The results are exhilarating. Setting the placid instrumentals and hypnotic, eastern-influenced grooves alongside gutsy balcony-shakers and widescreen, cinematic walls of sound, Who Built The Moon? is an album for the apocalypse, comforting queasy listeners with shades of the Noel Gallagher they rely on, while taking the adventurous dancing with him into the flames.

David Holmes, Producer of Who Built The Moon? says: “People are going to be surprised. I think people love Noel and theyre desperate for him to make a really big, bold, up-tempo beast of a record – a lot of Noels music is quite mid-tempo. This one is fun.”

How would Gallagher respond to control room commands to: “Stop ‘playing’ guitar!” and “Play me a guitar solo you can dance to!”?  Secure in the knowledge that the man challenging him had a vision to match his undimmed ambition, he entered the same, inventive space. The Man Who Built The Moon crystallises an outsider’s view of the partnership, flooded with lush orchestration and a sense of looming drama. It is the sound of an experienced songwriter supported by an accomplice similarly striving meticulously for perfection, as Gallagher reveals:

“We took a keyboard riff we liked from an unused track and added chords. A year later we came to deal with it as a song and when we got to the chorus, David kept asking me to write a new one….again and again and again. I was ready to strangle him. The one that you hear is the eighth attempt and, you know what? The annoying thing is he was right.”

On blue-touch-paper track, Fort Knox, barely a note is sung by Gallagher, instead toying with euphoric incantations, while It’s A Beautiful World bubbles with progressive, ambient electronica. Black & White Sunshine’s 60s, psychedelic pop DNA canvasses for more traditionalist votes while Holy Mountain is a game of ‘spot the obscure sample’ amidst a joyous wall of sound. Symptomatic of the unhurried back and forth between him and Holmes, Gallagher says of the latter track:

“David played me the sample, so I worked out the chords and we demoed just a few, short minutes of it, taking it away on tour and playing with it. When it became a song back in Belfast it was so joyous, I just had to do it justice. What’s more joyous than being in love, baby? So, I wrote a song about love and it’s one of the best things that I’ve ever done.”

  • SYML ‘Where’s My Love’ 21m, streams on Spotify & 5m views on Youtube

    ‘WHERE’S MY LOVE’

Over 21m streams on Spotify & almost 5m views for his heart-wrenching video for ‘WHERE’S MY LOVE’

“It’s a lush, subtle, and graceful piece of songwriting.”Clash

Translated as “simple” in Welsh, SYML is the creation of Brian Fennell, a Seattle-native and founding member of the indie-rock band Barcelona. With a keen grasp on textural and emotive songwriting, Fennell combines piano, minimalist synth and string-scapes with ethereal vocals to take the listener on a journey through the senses.

The last year has been busy for Fennell that saw the release of his debut EP ‘Hurt For Me’ which features a song with Jenn Champion (formerly of slowcore heroes Carissa’s Wierd), and signing to Nettwerk (Passenger, The Veils, Angus and Julia Stone) by the end of 2016.

One of the standout tracks from the EP is ‘Where’s My Love’, an expertly crafted song featuring sparse productions and intimate songwriting. It’s all underpinned by Fennell’s powerful, yet delicate vocals that drift in on exposed raw pleas of longing to reconnect with a loved one. ‘Where’s My Love’ has impressively managed to clock up 21 million combined Spotify streams alone and gained fans from all over the world.

Clash premiered the new video for ‘Where’s My Love’ which you can watch here

Fennell explains in more detail how the video came about: “I met the videographer (Gavin Michael Booth), when I was working on a project in the Cayman Islands. After a few nights of unusually lite beer, we got to talk about our respective projects. He told me about a treatment he’d been wanting to use for a while and I instantly knew it would fit perfectly with Where’s My Love. I think the video turned out beautifully simple and incredibly sad, which is perfect for the song.”

  • Warsaw Radio release ‘Whispers’ on 27 October

Release their new single ‘WHISPERS’ On 27th October

2017 has been a busy year for Warsaw Radio. After the release of their much-praised (BBC 6 Music, RTÉ Radio) debut single ‘After Eve’ earlier in the Spring and UK and Ireland dates including a main stage slot at Beautiful Days Festival alongside The Levellers & The Waterboys, the group arrive with new single Whispers – a track showcasing the group’s unique sound foregrounded by singer-songwriter and musician Brian McNamara’s baritone vocals and violinist Nikki Bates’ rich string performances.

McNamara moved to Brighton from Limerick in 2013, and it is a small moment in time in the seaside resort town that sparked the creation of the new song. He explains: “Two friends, a guy and a girl were deep in chat about the guy’s relationship…. the girl kept repeating to the guy “She doesn’t want to be your bore…. just adored”…. from there the song was born”. An observant and attentive depiction of young love, each verse is carried by a sturdy rhythm section and descending melodic line before segueing into an almighty chorus in which McNamara passionately calls the song’s main lyrical refrain.

With an upcoming debut album with Mercury Award-nominated producer Jag Jago (The Maccabees, Florence + The Machine) and live gig dates this coming October, the future is looking bright for the heartfelt and powerful quintet.

Whispers will be released independently on 27th October, and will be available via Spotify, Apple Music and other streaming platforms. W.R will be announcing their 2018 Irish dates in the coming weeks.

  • Duke Special releases new album ‘Hallow’ and announces Irish Tour.

    HALLOW

The new album from DUKE SPECIAL to be released on 6 October

in conjunction with his October IRISH TOUR kicking off on 11 October.

    Commissioned by Strollers Touring Network

new dates just added in Belfast London and Dublin February 2018

The eminent Belfast poet Michael Longley was once described by his friend Seamus Heaney as ‘a keeper of the artistic estate, a custodian of griefs and wonders’. Duke Special’s new studio album Hallow is entirely based on the poetry of Longley, full of gentleness, honesty, mischief and love, and peppered with a cast of artists, animals, flowers, friends and long forgotten soldiers. As ever, Duke Special is mining a new seam of inspiration, always trying to get to the bottom of what it means to be human.

By nature Duke Special is a curious person. He is curious about theatre, books, music, poetry, art, love, life, redemption, death, 78RPM records and most recently, gardening! All of this is evidenced by his releases which are a map of his passions. These days recording a new album is a tricky enough endeavour and many artists are reliant on their fans to collaborate with them in order to make a new recording happen. Duke has been writing for the past year and has just recently started recording Hallow, but is now asking his fans to pre-order Hallow in order to fund the last bit of the process.

Duke has set up a website called Advocate (www.advocateduke.com) where fans can pre-order the album in their preferred format: CD, vinyl or digital download. There will be a limited run of exclusive signed and numbered CD and vinyl releases which are only available on pre-order.

Every pre-order on all formats will include a special ADVOCATE PASS which will give you access to exclusive content online through the Advocate website. This will range from behind-the-scenes videos of the recording process and video messages from Duke on how the album is progressing, to snippets of demos and exclusive previews of Hallow.

The website will be live and taking pre-orders from FRIDAY JULY 14th. Fans can then see the album performed live on Duke Special’s October tour. (Dates and venues below. Check venue websites for ticket details.)

Duke says, ‘I genuinely hope that these songs will speak to you, inspire, comfort, challenge, provoke, make you cry, make you smile, make you wonder and all the things that good art should do.’
